Poms Preparatory & Dance Team Prep
JC Dance & Company runs a Poms Preparatory class in Wheat Ridge for dancers ages 11 to 16 who want to make a school dance or poms team. It is focused training for tryouts: the sharp technique, the kicks and turns, and the performance energy that judges look for. Dancers who want an edge at auditions come here to build it.
The class
Poms prep meets once a week. Here is the class, and the full weekly grid is on the class schedule.
Poms/Jazz, Wednesdays 6:00 to 7:00pm, ages 11 to 16
Dancers who take poms prep often also train in jazz and contemporary to round out their technique.
What a class looks like
Class is an hour and works like conditioning for a tryout. Dancers drill poms and jazz technique with sharp arm placement, clean lines, and precision, then work the skills auditions actually test: kick lines, sharp transitions, and strong projection. There is time on turns and leaps, including pirouettes, jumps, and traveling combinations, plus power and acro skills like toe touches, kip-ups, and head springs, all taught with proper progressions and safety. By the end of a session, dancers have both the skills and the confidence to stand out.
What tryout judges look for
Poms and dance team tryouts usually score a few things: how clean and sharp your motions are, whether your kicks are high and controlled, how well you hold your turns and landings, and how much you perform, which means eye contact, energy, and confidence. Class time goes straight to these. Outside of class, the best preparation is repetition: run your kicks and turns at home, learn your school's tryout material as early as you can, and get used to performing in front of people, even if it is just family. As tryouts get closer, we can tell you what to focus on.
Is this right for my dancer?
This class is for dancers who already have some training and a goal: a middle school or high school poms or dance team tryout. It moves faster than a beginner class and expects dancers to push. If your dancer is newer to dance but has their eye on a team, start in a jazz or contemporary class first to build a base, then add poms prep as tryouts get closer.
What to wear and bring
Fitted athletic clothes that let you kick and jump freely, hair pulled back tight, and jazz shoes or clean sneakers depending on what your dancer is used to. Bring knee pads if you have them for the floor skills, and a water bottle.
Questions parents ask
Who is this class for?
Dancers ages 11 to 16 who want to try out for a school poms or dance team, or who want to sharpen team-style technique.
Does my dancer need experience?
Some dance background helps, because the class moves quickly. A newer dancer can start in jazz or contemporary first and add poms prep later.
What skills does it cover?
Poms and jazz technique, kick lines, turns and leaps, sharp transitions, projection, and power skills like toe touches, all taught with safe progressions.
Is it safe to learn skills like toe touches and kip-ups?
Yes. Power and acro skills are taught with proper progressions, so dancers build up to them rather than rushing.
